In addition to film and television, computer games are currently becoming a central medium of collective memory and the narration of history. Interactive representation of the past creates new ways to reconstruct historical events and enables the inclusion of new types of popular narratives set in the past. On one hand, modern computer games are competitive in the perfection of historical accuracy (the display of weapons, for instance); on the other hand, the form of this medium requires gamification, i.e. the application of game mechanisms to the environment of simulated acts of war. Therefore, the ambition of the design of war games is to create a strong game experience, not perfect re-enactment of historical scenarios. Maria B. Garda will present the strategies involved in the reconstruction of history in contemporary digital culture, focusing on IL-2 Sturmovik, a simulator of air battles, and World of Tanks, an MMO game (a game for large numbers of online players), as well as discussing the results in relation to their gaming communities.
