Ian Christie: “What's the problem with local history?”
Is it just that my local isn't yours, and that local means “parochial”, getting preoccupied with trivia and issues that obscure the bigger picture? The human geographer Doreen Massey argues that 'local' is a vital way of understanding space, and this lecture will compare some versions of locality, with a special focus on Olomouc and on North London (my locales).

Ian Christie: History by other means: re-presenting our pasts
Everyone has an opinion about history, according to Jiri Lach. But what happens when we re-cast history in visual media and moving images, not to mention comic-books? Our project in Olomouc has looked at these new media and how they transmit history to new audiences, and often raise new questions about trust and balance. But can we believe what doesn't come with the seal of academic approval?
