Jerome de Groot: Lecture on Historical Narratives
On Wednesday, March 13, at 5 pm, Prof. Jerome de Groot will give a unique lecture on historical narratives illustrated by the example of Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Django Unchained (2012). The lecture will be held in the Auditorium Maximum of the Art Centre of Palacký University (Konvikt).
Jerome de Groot, the author of Consuming History (2008) will give a talk on issues of commodity, desire, ethics and historical difference in the popular reception of history, on the examples of British TV costume dramas, including Downton Abbey and Django Unchained. How does contemporary popular culture approach history? How is it interpreted in film, TV, museums and computer games? And, above all, who are the consumers of these versions of history?
The talk is aimed at students of theatre, film and media, art history and history. It will be held in English.
