Curator Bruno Marchand for Festival of Film Animation Olomouc 2014
Bruno Marchand, a theorist and curator based in Lisboa, Portugal, will present a special selection of films by João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva. Their work is rooted in two basic traditions of early cinema – on one hand there is the documentary character of brothers Lumière with their unassuming acceptance of everyday reality, on the other hand, the tradition of magic ascribed to Georges Méliès, the father of special effects and the founder of sci-fi and fantasy films. During the two presentations, more than 20 films will be shown, selected especially for this occasion by the artists themselves.
Saturday | December 6 | 9.30pm | film hall | Art Centre of the Palacky University - Konvikt | Bruno Marchand: João Maria Gusmão a Pedro Paiva. Film Screening #1
A presentation of the work of Lisbon-based João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva, who employ 16 and 35mm film, photography, sculpture, installations as well as optical devices like camera obscura. Their efforts often result in „poetic-philosophical narratives“ disguised as documentaries about unexplicable phenomena and inappropriate scientific experiments, or lists of events with
unexpected, comical or theatrical endings. Their stories reside in the grey zone between reality and artful staging and reveal the irrational character of our being, and the compelling magnetism of things that are not evident and apparent.
Sunday | December 7 | 4pm | theatre hall | Art Centre of the Palacky University - Konvikt | Bruno Marchand: João Maria Gusmão a Pedro Paiva. Film Screening #2
The collaboration of João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva gives shape to three groups of works, each revolving around a global theme. Their creative universe embrace pre-socratic philosophy, Isaac Newton´s optical studies, Darwin´s theory of evolution, sci-fi stories by Slanislaw Lem, Fernando Pessoa´s „recreational metaphysics“ and Alfred Jarry´s „pataphysics“, and draw its energy from clear paradoxes and adamant opposities.
